OFFICIALS SAY A PRIVATE CONTRACTOR HIT THE LINE WHICH RESULTED IN A QUOTE "CATASTROPHIC FAILURE." THE WATER FAILURE - - AFFECTING PEOPLE IN BENTONVILLE, CAVE SPRINGS, AND BELLA VISTA. <> "We scrambled to get crews to isolate the leak, to shut off valves on the 48 inch line. As we noticed, our system was losing pressure and elevations in our storage tanks and also at the same time having crews coordinate with Rogers to establish our emergency feed." Parts of Bentonville and Cave Springs experienced water loss following a water line collapse, according to city officials.An emergency alert from the city of Bentonville said that the main water line that serves Bentonville had collapsed. The alert stated at 8:40 p.m. that an emergency connection with the city of Rogers was being established.Officials said thanks to prompt action by crews, concerns regarding public health were averted."Our water utilities director called me around 8:00 when they had the collapse of the line. They had already been on scene trying to work the situation, understand the situation," said Bentonville Mayor Stephanie Orman.Mike Bender, the water utilities director for the city of Bentonville, said a private contractor was drilling into the ground to get soil samples when they struck the line, resulting in a "catastrophic failure." The water disruption affected residents in Bentonville, Cave Springs, and Bella Vista."We scrambled to get crews to isolate the leak, to shut off valves on the 48-inch line. As we noticed, our system was losing pressure and elevations in our storage tanks and also at the same time having crews coordinate with Rogers to establish our emergency feed," Bender said.Bender mentioned that the emergency feed from Rogers did not impact the city's customers, as all water is sourced from the Beaver Water District. Despite the pressure loss in the water system, officials assured that there were no concerns regarding water contamination."They are aware of our situation and our response, and they have no concerns for public health either," said Bender.40/29 News asked what private contractor was responsible for the waterline damage and whether they would face any fines. The city of Bentonville stated that such information has not been released.
