WALHALLA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The U.S. Forest Service for Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests said multiple prescribed burns are underway on Friday.

Controlled wildfire burns are used to improve wildlife habitat, remove hazardous fuel for fires, and enhance forest health.

Burns are being conducted in Rabun, Walker and Putnam counties in Georgia.

The Rabun County prescribed burn, located closest to the Upstate, is 1,261 acres in the Warwoman Wildlife Management area. It’s located about five miles northeast of Clayton, Georgia which is less than 10 miles from the South Carolina border.

FOX Carolina First Alert Meteorologist Bryan Bachman said the plume of smoke from Clayton is visibly spreading into Mountain Rest and Walhalla on radar. FOX Carolina’s weather camera in Clemson also showed hazy conditions.

Drivers are asked to use caution if they encounter areas of smoke that impair view of the roadway.
