Gardaí are set to spend up to €250,000 on 200 new mountain bikes as the force increases in bike-mounted patrols around the country.

As of last August, there were 556 mountain bikes in the Garda fleet, alongside six electric bikes.

The force is now seeking tenders for the supply of 200 more bikes, which it expects to cost €250,000 excluding VAT.

It means the request for tender values each bike at €1,250.

The bikes must feature aluminium frames, with “high vis fully reflective Garda decals” supplied and fitted.

They must have Shimano gears and hydraulic breaks and semi-slick tyres with puncture-resistant tubes.

The bikes will also be fitted with anatomic saddles, mudguards, a kickstand and a carried bag.

The tender notes that Gardaí expect to order 100 bikes within 30 days of awarding a contract to a supplier, with the potential for two more orders of 50 bikes each over the term of the contract.
