Charter bus carrying 56 University of South Carolina students to New Orleans crashes on I-10 in Hancock County
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A charter bus carrying University of South Carolina students to New Orleans crashed on I-10 in Hancock County, near the Louisiana state line, around 3:30 p.m.
The Mississippi State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. The bus, carrying Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity members to a formal event, experienced a tire blowout.
Bay St. Louis MS Police Chief Toby Schwartz reported that following the blowout, the bus lifted onto two wheels. The driver, trying to control the vehicle, stood up and was ejected when the bus landed hard, breaking the windshield.
A student then took over the steering and stopped the bus.
11 injuries were reported, including the ejected driver. Emergency services responded, transporting nine people by ambulance and two by helicopter to a New Orleans Level 1 trauma center, as southern Mississippi has only Level 2 centers. The bus had 56 passengers.
No fatalities have been reported.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
