LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — On February 16, a home along Silver Ridge Drive in Sterling exploded, killing one firefighter and injuring 12 other people. The cause of the explosion was later connected to a leaking 500-gallon underground propane tank.
That evening, crews arrived after the homeowner reported smelling gas. Forty minutes after firefighters arrived, the house exploded with crews still inside. Sterling Volunteer Firefighter Trevor Brown was killed in the explosion and 12 others were injured.
Following the explosion, the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) took aim at Southern States Cooperative, Inc. – Leesburg – Fairfax Petroleum Service. The propane delivery company was told to halt the delivery or transfer or propane within the county and other incorporated towns while it reviewed and updated the company's fire code information.
Less than a month later, LCFR-FMO has lifted those restrictions and allowed regular propane delivery to resume Tuesday, saying the necessary fire prevention code-related information has been updated.
"The incident will remain under investigation until further notice," The LCFR-FMO said in a press release. "The LCFR-FMO will continue to work with Southern States throughout the remainder of the investigation process."
