A POPULAR buffet venue in Newcastle City Centre has announced it will permanently close following the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Za Za Bazaar in The Gate shopping complex will remain permanently shut after several years serving the city. 

In a statement online, restaurant bosses said: "Unfortunately, due to these unprecedented times, we have taken the decision not to reopen the Newcastle restaurant which will remain permanently closed. 

"We would like to thank all of our Za Za Bazaar community for the support they have shown us. We will miss you. 

"Our Bristol restaurant remains open under new measures. Take care and thank you to you all."

The restaurant had proved a huge hit with revellers in the city as it attracted more than 1,300 reviews on TripAdvisor.

Although many appeared to have a mixed experience with the restaurant achieving a 3.5/5 rating overall. 

On social media, hundreds of people reacted to the restaurant's announcement with many expressing their disappointment.

Craig Harker said: "A fantastic restaurant at the heart of Newcastle centre. Wish the owners and all the staff the best for the future."

Another customer, Lindsey Murray said: "Such a shame loved goin to the cinema then for food even chose this place for my birthday every other year."

Meanwhile Carol Ann Ross added: "So sorry for the owners, management, staff and the customers. We hope that the future will bring you back to Newcastle."
