CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A Tri-State man is marking National Donate Life Month during his recovery from a kidney transplant, a gift he received from a stranger with thanks to a sign

“If I see a sign that says kidney donor and I’ve got a kidney why would I not call and see if I could give mine?” says Taylor O’Shaughnessy.

O’Shaughnessy was shopping at Aldi in Westwood when she saw a sign requesting a kidney donor for Scott Cassiere and a phone number. She called the number for The Christ Hospital and learned she was a match for Cassiere.

“I couldn’t believe how enthusiastic she was to do this for me,” Scott Cassiere explains.

O’Shaughnessy was able to meet Scott and his wife Tina before the surgery. The transplant surgery was in early April and both are recovering well.

Now they say in a matter of months, O’Shaughnessy went from a total stranger to a lifesaver they consider a member of their family.

“It’s hard to ask someone for a kidney,” explains The Christ Hospital Recipient Coordinator Brandon Maddy, “But it’s not hard for someone who loves their spouse in this case. Tina was able to find the right person at the right time.”

Scott was born with one kidney. He learned he needed a kidney transplant almost two years ago.

Not only did they make yard signs, but Tina wore a shirt with the same information when she traveled across the country and even to Europe.

Believe it or not, those types of actions work according to The Christ Hospital.

“We actually just had somebody call from China for one of our patients,” Maddy continues, “So yeah, it works. You just have to put the information out there and we will do the rest.”

“I have never once even begun to regret doing this,” explains O’Shaughnessy, “It feels really good to give someone else something they really need.”
