SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Brian Lopez recently drove more than 500 miles from Northern California to Tijuana, Mexico, just south of the border, where he and other legal experts gathered to offer free guidance to people seeking asylum in the United States.

Lopez, a Sacramento-based immigration attorney, said it’s important work — especially because only a small fraction of asylum seekers can obtain legal help as they formally submit their cases to the immigration courts.

Iranians are voting in a runoff election for the remaining seats in the country’s parliament after hard-line politicians dominated March balloting. People in 22 constituencies across the country will elect 45 representatives from a pool of 90 candidates, 15 of whom are considered moderate. In the capital, Tehran, 16 representatives will be chosen from 32 candidates, all hard-liners. Final results are expected on Monday, though counts in smaller constituencies are likely before that. Iran’s parliament plays a secondary role in governing the country. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say in all important state matters.

But experts warn there are virtually no consequences for countries that choose not to comply. A final draft of the treaty was meant to be ready Friday but deep divisions over issues like intellectual property could derail the agreement.

Ronald Greene’s deadly arrest on a rural Louisiana roadside in 2019 sparked outrage after The Associated Press published long-suppressed body-camera video showing white state troopers stunning, beating and dragging the Black motorist as he wailed, “I’m scared!” Yet five years on, a federal investigation into the case remains open with no end in sight. Mona Hardin is Greene's mother. She says she feels angry that other major civil rights cases from that period — including George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery — have long ago been prosecuted. She asks, “Where’s Ronald Greene’s justice?” A Justice Department spokesperson says only that the probe remains ongoing.

A few weeks ago, Edmundo González Urrutia was just another grandfather visiting his daughter and grandchildren, who live abroad, enjoying two months of family time. That leisurely pace will have to wait because González is now getting ready for a campaign to become Venezuela’s next president. González became the candidate of the Unitary Platform coalition last month after former lawmaker Maria Corina Machado, and her handpicked alternative were banned from registering. González told The Associated Press Thursday he plans to kick off his campaign later this month and said Machado and other opposition leaders will continue to host events around the country.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is preparing to update his budget proposal. Newsom announced a nearly $38 billion budget deficit in January. The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office said the deficit was actualy $58 billion if you include some reductions in public education spending. Since then, California's revenue has not improved. Newsom will announce his updated proposal on Friday. Collections from the state's three largest taxes were more than $6 billion below projections through the end of April. This means the deficit has likely grown. Last month, Newsom and lawmakers already agreed on some steps to make the deficit smaller by about $17 billion.

Two men on opposite sides of the metal barricades during the riot at the U.S. Capitol are running for Congress on the same day. Derrick Evans served three months in federal prison on a felony civil disorder charge. He's challenging Rep. Carol Miller in Tuesday's West Virginia Republican primary. Harry Dunn was a Capitol Police officer who defended lawmakers from attack on Jan. 6, 2021. Dunn is part of a crowded field seeking the Democratic nomination for a congressional seat in Maryland. Their candidacies at least raise the possibility that they could serve alongside one another while holding starkly different views of the violence and destruction of Jan. 6.

Charred homes and cars dot the hilltop West Bank village of Duma, a searing reminder of Palestinians' vulnerability to rising violence from Israeli settlers. The head of village council says the wreckage is the aftermath of an attack in mid-April that left 15 homes damaged by arson and six residents injured by bullets. He says Duma lacks the power to defend itself. The U.N. says there have been nearly 800 settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the war in Gaza began. The attack in Duma occurred after a 14-year-old Israeli who went missing was found dead. Authorities arrested a man from Duma they say was connected to the boy's alleged murder.

California is partnering with five companies to develop generative AI tools to help the state deliver public services. The partnerships were announced Thursday as Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom tries to position California as an AI leader. The state plans to run a six-month trial before deciding whether to launch the tools. Generative AI can create new content such as text, audio and photos in response to prompts. It's powerful technology that could improve governmental work, but needs oversight. All the tools being developed are considered low risk, meaning they don’t interact with confidential data or personal information.

Lithuania is holding a presidential election on Sunday at a time when Russian gains on the battlefield in Ukraine are fueling greater fears across all of Europe about Moscow's intentions. But the anxieties are particularly high in the strategically important Baltic region. The popular incumbent Gitanas Nausėda is favored to win another five-year term. But there are eight candidates running in all. That makes it unlikely that any candidate can win the 50% of the votes. A runoff will be held on May 26 in that case. The Lithuanian president’s main tasks involve overseeing foreign and security policy and acting as the supreme commander of the armed forces.

The third week of testimony in Donald Trump’s hush money trial is drawing to a close. It comes after jurors heard the dramatic, if not downright seamy, account of Stormy Daniels’ alleged sexual encounter with the former president. Meanwhile, prosecutors are gearing up for their most crucial witness: former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. Daniels’ story was a necessary building block for prosecutors. They are seeking to show that Trump and his allies bought up and buried potentially damaging stories in the waning weeks of the 2016 presidential election in an effort to illegally influence the race. Trump denies any wrongdoing, telling reporters Thursday, “I'm innocent.”

Amid the spiraling chaos, a growing number of Haitians are praying more or visiting Vodou priests known as “oungans” for urgent requests ranging from locating loved ones who were kidnapped to finding critical medication needed to keep someone alive.
