CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- No. 1 Notre Dame outscored Virginia 7-3 in the second half to hand the team their third straight loss Saturday afternoon. 

After battling back and forth for most of the afternoon, the Cavaliers took the lead with 12:52 left in the game courtesy of Ryan Colsey to take a 9-8, but after that, the Fighting Irish finished the game scoring three unanswered goals to escape with the victory. 

"I feel disappointed obviously for our men, but I'm also disappointed for all the fans who came out," Virginia men's lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany said. 6,497 fans were on hand at Klockner this afternoon. "We are so grateful that they would just pour out here in droves. The biggest crowd that I've ever witnessed as a coach here and that's what makes this loss hurt so bad. To see us not be able to take care of the ball. We don't talk about turnovers with our men almost never. This is one of those almost and give Notre Dame credit." 

The Cavaliers had 27 turnovers this afternoon and was outnumbered in the ground ball category 50-26. 

"Everything that we needed is there," senior captain Cole Kastner said. "It's always been there. In all those ACC games, I felt very confident that all the pieces that we need to win and take it to the next level are there, so getting back to film."

Payton Cormier scored a game-high four goals. Connor Shellenberger recorded one goal and two assists, but had six turnovers. Now with 183 career assists, Shellenberger tied Matt Danowski’s ACC career assists record.

Virginia be the No. 4 seed in next week's ACC Tournament and will take on Notre Dame again in the semifinals from Charlotte on Friday at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Syracuse/Duke in the ACC title game on May 5.
