Fire crews extinguish two grass fires from train sparks in Fond du Lac County

FOND DU LAC COUNTY (WLUK) – Fond du Lac Fire Rescue crews responded to two grass fires Saturday afternoon that they believe were started by sparks from a passing train.

At 1:22 p.m., fire crews responded to a grass fire just east of the eastbound S. Hickory Street on-ramp for Highway 151.

Fire officials say shortly after arriving on scene, a second grass fire call came in for the north side of 151 along Kohlmann Road.

Both fires were along the same railroad tracks, about 100 yards apart.

The fires were put out within a half hour.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, fire danger in the state is high in 65 of 72 counties. It is very high in the other 7, including in Waupaca, Waushara, Marquette, and Green Lake.
