COTTONWOOD, AZ (AZFamily) — A suspect is hospitalized in critical condition after a traffic stop led to a police-involved shooting in Cottonwood on Friday night. An officer was also hurt.

The situation began shortly before 8 p.m. when a Cottonwood police officer pulled over a car on 12th Street just north of Arizona Route 89A. Few other details have been released, but police say that during the traffic stop, the officer and driver began fighting, “resulting in an officer-involved shooting.”

The suspect was taken to a Flagstaff hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound and remains in critical condition. The person’s name has not been released.

Cottonwood police say the officer was also hurt and taken to a nearby hospital. The officer, a six-year veteran of the department, has since been treated for an unspecified injury and released.

The incident is under investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

This is the second officer-involved shooting that happened in Arizona on Friday. Earlier that morning, a 30-year-old man was shot after Yuma police say he threatened officers with a weapon.

There have been 29 officer-involved shootings across the state so far this year.
