Groundbreaking for the single-track trail portion of the new Prairie Rock Trails will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, just north of the Alternative High School located at 19 N. Illinois Avenue, according to a press release.Â
The PRT Riverhawk Trail is just one of the legs to link the miles of the broader regional Prairie Rock Trails system in North Iowa. Narrower single-track trails are used in all four seasons primarily for biking, hiking, and snowshoeing. Â
Located on school property, the segment of trail will provide an opportunity for skills development and programming to students at the middle and high school. Additionally, the PRT Riverhawk single track will allow for a loop near the river and will serve as the closest trail to several neighborhoods on the east side of Mason City.Â
An improved pedestrian crossing on North Illinois Avenue will connect this trail to one on the other side of the Winnebago River, as well as the High Line Trail, the future bike park and River Walk.Â
