MPD said that the suspects were identified as an 18-year-old and 17-year-old. The 18-year-old died in the shooting, police said.

Police also said the 18-year-old was arrested in March with a Glock switch, charged with stealing two cars before being released without bond.

Police said the officers were shot at when they approached a suspicious, stolen car around 2 a.m. Friday, April 12, at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue. They returned fire, striking the two suspects, police said.

“The men and women of the Memphis Police Department are hurt right now," she said. "As chief of police, I am hurt right now. Once again, senseless deaths in our community by gun violence.”
