NEW YORK — “The Great Gatsby: A New Musical” still is what many people think of when they ponder a big Broadway night out: A familiar yet glamorous title from the Jazz Age; a star tenor like Jeremy Jordan; lush, string-heavy orchestrations; songs of passion, obsession and resolve, and a massive art deco set from Paul Tate dePoo III cascading off the stage of the Broadway Theatre, which has decor to match.

Those old-fashioned components might be enough for this title (now helpfully in the public domain) to find a warm-weather audience. There’s an unceasing public appetite for the characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel, a racy story of decadence, infidelity and lies. Every time I’ve seen some version of it, and there have been many, I’ve seen at least some audience members dressed to the nines in suits and evening gowns. People raise their game when they’re taking a date to “The Great Gatsby,” even when they are far from Broadway.

President Joe Biden says he won’t participate in the campaign debates sponsored by a nonpartisan commission, instead challenging Republican Donald Trump to a pair of debates. Biden said Wednesday that Trump lost two debates to him in 2020 and since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Biden proposes debating Trump twice. The Democrat suggests the two candidates could pick some dates, taking a dig at Trump’s ongoing hush money trial by noting that the Republican is “free on Wednesdays,” the usual day off in the trial. Trump has repeatedly dared Biden to debate him, keeping a second podium open at rallies and claiming Biden would not be up for the task.

The incident caused panic in Kano, northern Nigeria’s largest state, where periodic religion-related unrest has occurred over the years, sometimes resulting in violence.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed targeting a U.S. Navy destroyer and a commercial ship in the Red Sea, but there was no immediate confirmation that any attacks took place. Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said Wednesday that the rebels targeted the USS Mason with missiles and launched an attack on a ship he identified as the Destiny. Multiple vessels have that name in shipping registries. The U.S. Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Mason, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, has been in the Red Sea and the wider region as part of a U.S.-led coalition trying to prevent Houthi attacks on shipping.

Twenty years ago, Beth Stroud was defrocked from her beloved job as a United Methodist pastor in Philadelphia. In a church trial, she was found guilty of violating Christian teaching because she acknowledged living in a committed relationship with another woman. Earlier this month, delegates at a United Methodist conference struck down longstanding anti-LGBTQ bans and created a path for clergy ousted because of them to seek reinstatement. Stroud is taking that path. She is optimistic that United Methodist authorities in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania will restore her pastoral credentials next week.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says his regime is prepared to negotiate over the conflict in Ukraine in an interview with Chinese media. A section of Spurs fans seemed to want their team to lose to help prevent fierce north London rival Arsenal winning the league.

The use of a voice-cloning technology marrying old audio clips to an actor's narration is bringing an historic U.S. Supreme Court decision to life. A recreation allows listeners to ‘hear’ the oral arguments and reading of the decision in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. That decision launched school desegregation at the beginning of the civil rights era. Friday represents the 70th anniversary of the decision being handed down. Old recordings of former Chief Justice Earl Warren and future Justice Thurgood Marshall were used. Not everybody is a fan of the technology, however, worrying about a bad precedent being set

The stars have aligned for the WNBA with Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese joining the ranks of A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi and others. The league is getting unparalleled attention. Now the challenge for the WNBA is to translate this hype and hoopla into a movement and not just a moment in its history. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said everyone involved in the game needs to be more innovative in how players and games are marketed and promoted to take advantage of the potential tsunami for both the league and women’s sports. That means fans spending money and the WNBA making all the right moves ahead of its next media deal after the 2025 season.
