Meet the candidates running for Congress in Massachusetts

Most members of Massachusetts' all-Democrat congressional delegation face at least one challenger in the upcoming election. Some have already survived primary challenges from within their own party to make it onto the ballot.

Only Rep. Richard Neal, of the 1st District, and Rep. Lori Trahan, of the 3rd District, are running unopposed. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is also not on the ballot because her term ends in 2025.

U.S. Senate - Sen. Ed Markey

Sen. Ed Markey, 74, has served in Congress since 1976, first in the House and later in the Senate. He assumed his current office in July 2013 after winning a special election to serve the balance of John Kerry’s sixth Senate term after Kerry was appointed U.S. Secretary of State. The Malden native then won a full six-year term by winning a 2014 Senate election.

In September, he defeated 39-year-old challenger U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III in a hard-fought Democratic primary. Markey was able to propel himself to a win over his younger rival in part by harnessing the backing from progressive leaders including New York Democratic U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Markey is the Senate author of the Green New Deal, a proposed legislation package focused on climate change and energy policy. His co-author on the bill is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of New York, who endorsed him in the primary race. Markey also served as the chair of the House Energy Independence Committee from March 2007 until January 2011.
