MENIFEE, CA — A Menifee man who was pulling out of his residential driveway Thursday afternoon ran over a 2-year-old girl who he didn't see, and the child died at the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 35-year-old driver was "slowly pulling forward out of his driveway" around 3:35 p.m. on Whembly Circle when the Menifee toddler walked directly onto the driveway and into his path, the agency said.

The man didn't see the girl on the front right side of his 1997 Chevrolet and she was run over by his right front tire in the driveway, according to the CHP.
