Lewes, DE -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/01/2016 -- Competition in Bahrain's mobile and wireline telecoms market is healthy as it shows measurable benefits for users and still generates the second most attractive returns for operators in the MENA region. Mobile prices in Bahrain have declined by up to 55% between 2010 and 2015, according to a study released by Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in December 2015.

The retail price benchmark study revealed that fixed broadband prices in the country saw a decline of up to 85% in the reported period. The price of residential ADSL broadband with speeds of up to 10Mbps decreased to BHD20 (USD53) in 2015 from BHD80 (USD212) in 2010, while data allowance increased from 50GB in 2010 to 150GB in 2015. The report noted that users in Bahrain have benefited from a wide range of retail telecom services and more data at lower rates between 2010 and 2015.

The Norwegian mobile market is effectively a duopoly between Telenor and Netcom, and we are sceptical that the efforts of ice.net, through the no-frills segment, and Get, offering convergence as a MVNO, will drastically change the competitive dynamics. The only market where Telenor is not fully dominant (with a market share below 50%) is broadband, especially through fibre, as the main competition comes from a range of smaller providers, driven by municipalities. This fragmentation means it does not have the scale required on a nationwide level to create a strong new player in the market, offering stronger competition for consumers.

Key Data

- There were 5.865mn mobile subscribers in Norway in Q315, as the market continues to oscillate between 5.8mn and 5.9mn subscribers, a trend since 2013.

- The overall broadband market was in decline between 2014 and H115 according to regulator data, reaching 2.514mn. The fixed market continues to grow with over 2mn customers and fibre gains offsetting DSL losses, but the declining dedicated mobile broadband segment had a greater impact

- The fixed voice market continues to decline, reaching 1.029mn in H115, as new players focus on broadband and pay-TV services, and market leader Telenor cannot bundle services to snot bstem its losses

The election of a more pro-business government offers hope that Venezuela's stagnant telecoms market can be reinvigorated through the application of external investment. However, the judiciary and civil service are largely manned by socialist sympathisers, and we expect efforts to privatise incumbent CANTV will be resisted. Additionally, economic reforms will be slow to be applied and slower still to bring any tangible benefits, meaning that disposable incomes will remain low.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

- The mobile market shrank markedly in 2015 owing to the disconnection of inactive accounts and falling incomes. 3G/4G uptake proved more vibrant than expected due to state subsidies and enforced low tariffs. We forecast 29.4mn mobile subscriptions by 2020, of which 14.8mn will be 3G/4G.

- The 'broadband' market has been shrinking as consumers discard dedicated mobile broadband access in favour of smartphone-delivered voice-and-data services. The ageing last-mile access network of CANTV cannot support wireline broadband expansion unless significant investment is obtained. We forecast 3.5mn broadband subscriptions by 2020, versus 3.4mn at the end of 2015.
