Former Bachelor star reveals fears after doctors discover an 'extensive, massive rupture' in her breast implants done in Thailand

A former Bachelor star fears being left with unsightly scars as she prepares to have emergency surgery to remove breast implants she got in Thailand a decade ago.

Sarah-Mae Amey, who appeared on Tim Robards' season in 2013, revealed last week that doctors had identified an 'extensive, massive rupture' in her left implant.

And on Monday, the Gold Coast florist admitted she was struggling to cope with the fact that she will be left with extensive scarring if she doesn't replace her old implants with new ones.

'I had my first hysterical cry yesterday about what they will look like afterwards with the scars,' Sarah-Mae wrote on Instagram Stories.

'But then I pulled myself together and remembered they are just boobs. They don't define me.'

Sarah-Mae said she had decided not to get new implants put back in because it wasn't 'worth the risk' of having another rupture.

Sarah-Mae also believes she has been suffering from breast implant illness, a term used by women who self-identify symptoms they feel are directly connected to breast implants.

'I am connecting all of the dots and feeling like this could potentially be the cause of so many of my health issues because my body is so inflamed,' she wrote, adding that she started having 'strange health issues' after getting implants at the age of 19.

She cited a variety of health issues over the years, including blood clots, dizzy spells, endometriosis, an appendix removal, food intolerances, breathing issues and inflammation of the rib cage.

What happens when breast implants rupture?

All types of breast implants have the potential to tear. This is known as a rupture.

When a saline implant ruptures (or its valve fails) the saline quickly leaks out and is absorbed by the body, leaving the breast looking deflated in a matter of days.

It is less obvious to identify when a silicone implant ruptures, as the gel takes much longer to ooze out of the rupture than saline.

The silicone is not absorbed, and can therefore spread to other parts of the body.

The body may react to the silicone implant rupture by forming scar tissue, sometimes causing a distortion of the breast's shape.

In an Instagram video last week, Sarah-Mae urged her fans to get their breast implants checked regularly.

'I was experiencing stabbing pains in my left boob quite a while ago and I just left it,' she admitted.

As a result of her inaction, Sarah-Mae's rupture became 'quite dangerous'.

'Don't get your boobs done in Thailand, basically,' she concluded. 'I thought it was a great idea as a young and naive 19-year-old.'

What is breast implant illness?

Breast implant illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self-identify and describe a variety of symptoms they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone, textured or smooth breast implants.

The symptoms include (but not limited to) fatigue, chest pain, hair loss, headaches, chills, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, body odor, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues and hormonal issues.

However, there is no definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process.
