While New Zealand were winning the World Test Championship, in a miraculous example of how to maximise scant resources, England were steamrolling Sri Lanka by eight wickets.
It made a minor historical nicety that a Test match and a T20 international overlapped. When Ross Taylor clipped the winning boundary at Southampton, in a moment befitting one of the sport’s finest ambassadors, the first over had already been delivered at Sophia Gardens.
This opening over, bowled by Chris Woakes, cost only two runs and set the tone for Sri Lanka’s inadequate innings. England’s pace bowlers were too quick, straight and penetrative for a Sri Lankan side shorn of any of the major talents they customarily sport, and England’s spinners were too crafty.
The tourists’ total of 129 for seven was perhaps 50 short of par, while England’s T20 side were as well-oiled as their Test team in the New Zealand series were clanky.
Greater pace-bowling penetration was what England had sought during their last T20 series in India, especially in the six-over powerplay when only two fielders can be stationed outside the semi-circles, and Sri Lanka were duly curbed to 39 for two.
Then England kept on taking wickets, so there were no partnerships, no wickets in hand, no launching-pad, no take-off, just a face-saving 50 off 44 balls from Dasun Shanaka.
Woakes compensated for the absence of Jofra Archer, following up his opening over by bowling the third for only seven runs. This made quite a comeback considering Woakes’ last T20 international was back in November 2015, almost the Dark Ages of this format. In addition, Mark Wood weighed into the powerplay as he had in India, bowling the fourth over at high pace, while Sam Curran took a wicket during his two overs.
England introduced some greater penetration to their spin bowling as well, their six overs of spin taking three wickets. Again, against stronger opposition than a Sri Lankan team in conflict with its own board over contracts, England’s improvement might not always be sustained, but it worked a treat on a cool evening in Cardiff.
Moeen Ali must have deserved a game, if only for all the days and nights confined to his hotel room last winter, but Eoin Morgan opted for Lancashire’s all-rounder Liam Livingstone at No 6 to replace Ben Stokes. Moeen is normally economical in white-ball cricket rather than penetrative: in T20 internationals he averages 37 runs per wicket, which is high, and a wicket every 25 balls, which is fewer than one per game even if he bowls his full allotment.
Livingstone offered something less predictable with his own patented, uncoached method. He bowled offbreaks to Sri Lanka’s left-handers, and only to them, and legbreaks to their right-handers, including one that did not turn and pinned Kusal Mendis leg-before.
Mendis, who chose to review a ball destined for middle stump, has been appointed vice-captain in this format, which might illustrate how far their team has to develop.
Livingstone is also as good an outfielder as anyone in this England T20 squad. Nobody could be sounder under a high ball than Chris Jordan, who swallowed three more catches at long-on, two of them steeplers, but Livingstone showed a throwing arm as strong as anyone’s while he patrolled the 90-yard boundary on the city side.
England plundered 61 without loss from their powerplay. Jason Roy and Jos Buttler caned Sri Lanka’s pace bowlers whose deliveries were as light as England’s were heavy. Buttler drove one ball out of the ground and a couple of lusty blows from Bairstow helped secure England’s seventh victory in seven T20 internationals on this ground.
ENGLAND WIN BY 8 WICKETS
Buttler gets a thick edge off the first ball of Chameera's over and that's that. To be honest Perera should've probably caught it but it doesn't make any difference in the grand scheme of things.
Buttler finishes on 68* off 55 balls and Bairstow 13* off 12. A comprehensive win for Morgan's men to start this three-match series.
OVER 17: ENG 129/2 (Bairstow 13 Buttler 67)
Beautiful start from Bairstow who reverse sweeps Dananjaya fine for four off the first ball of the over. He whips the spinner away through leg for one, before Buttler does the same. And then Bairstow launches Dananjaya into the stands over midwicket for six off the last ball of the over. That was right out of the screws.
OVER 12: ENG 102/1 (Malan 5 Buttler 55)
Wow! This is a beautiful strike from Buttler who saunters down the pitch and blasts Dananjaya over long on for six...and that's out of the ground in fact! The very next ball he rocks back deep in his crease and crashes a pull through midwicket for four. That's fifty for Buttler who has looked in imperious touch. He flicks Dananjaya into the leg side for two and pilfers a single for good measure.
5⃣0⃣ for Jos Buttler! 👊

OVER 11: ENG 87/1 (Malan 4 Buttler 41)
Unlucky! Hasaranga baffles Malan with his first ball...the batsman looks to work a googly away into the leg side but it bites in the surface and Malan gets a thick edge down to third man for one. Buttler rotates the strike and then Malan times a nice drive through the covers for two - that's a bit more like it.
Wicket!!
Roy c Gunathilaka b Chameera 36. Wow what a catch!! Chameera back into the attack at the River Taff End and Roy rocks back and looks to swat his first ball over the off side...he crunches it to the left of Gunathilaka at wide mid-off but the fielder plucks the ball out of the air goalkeeper-style at full-length. That is an absolute stunner.
FOW 80/1
OVER 8: ENG 76/0 (Roy 33 Buttler 37)
Shot! Wow even Buttler likes this one. It's a pretty rank short ball from Udana and Buttler steps back and nails it through midwicket. There's two fielders out there but he bisected them and the ball absolutely raced away. He has a word with Roy in the middle and is all smiles.
OVER 6: ENG 61/0 (Roy 28 Buttler 29)
Udana will bowl the final over of the powerplay. His left-arm over is nice and tight for the first four balls with just two singles to mention...but then Buttler smashes back-to-back fours. The first is a nicely timed slash through point all along the floor but the second shot is even better...slightly over-pitched and Buttler carves it over extra cover.
OVER 5: ENG 51/0 (Roy 27 Buttler 20)
Bowling change for Sri Lanka, with off-spinner Dananjaya into the attack. Roy throws the kitchen sink at a sweep and gets four more just behind square...that absolutely raced to the boundary with one bounce. Then the England openers nudge and nurdle three more singles. They've dominated the powerplay so far.
OVER 4: ENG 44/0 (Roy 20 Buttler 18)
England are starting to motor now. Roy smashes Pradeep into the stands over midwicket for six. Then he follows up with a nicely-placed pull behind square for four. Two wides in a row from Pradeep haven't really helped matters. A couple of singles and that's 17 off the over.
MASSIVE! 💥🙌

England are off to a flyer as Jason Roy nails the ball over the legside for a big, big six!

OVER 3: ENG 27/0 (Roy 10 Buttler 16)
Lovely shot to start this over from Buttler who opens the face and slices Chameera over extra cover for four. He plays back two dots and then throws his hands at a short ball outside off and gets four more courtesy of a thick outside edge, before clipping a straight ball into the leg side for a single.
Then Roy pounces on a short ball and dismissively pulls it in front of midwicket for another boundary.
OVER 2: ENG 14/0 (Roy 6 Buttler 7)
Buttler shimmies across to the off side and flicks a straight ball from Pradeep over the head of short fine leg for a single. Then Roy strolls down the pitch and chops away behind square on the leg side for four. Roy and Buttler nab one each off the last couple of balls.
OVER 1: ENG 7/0 (Roy 1 Buttler 5)
A bit of a scratchy start from Roy, who completely misses two booming drives off Chameera to start the innings before squirting a thick outside edge down to third man. Buttler slices a drive through point for England's first boundary. They dash through for a quick single off the last ball.
Sri Lanka 129/7
Fantastic stuff from the England bowlers and Eoin Morgan's side need 130 to win. You'd hope that doesn't cause them too much trouble.
Chris Woakes is interviewed by Sky and says the wicket is "a little bit two-paced". It certainly looked that way with a few balls sticking in the pitch and the Sri Lankans struggling to get the spinners away.
OVER 20: SL 129/7 (Shanaka 50 Udana 6)
Curran to bowl the last over of the innings. And Shanaka smashes him over square leg for a maximum! He's held this innings together for the Sri Lankans. Shanaka tries another big shot and only manages to send it into orbit...but the balls lands safe before two fielders and it's two more.
Then he slices a full toss out to the cover point boundary for two more and brings up his second T20i fifty. Off 43 balls. But Shanaka is out off the final ball of the innings, top edging a hoik to leg straight into Buttler's gloves.
OVER 19: SL 117/6 (Shanaka 38 Udana 6)
Shanaka has a big swipe at a 69mph slower ball from Jordan and hits nothing but fresh air. But then he strikes a much-needed boundary with a well-timed clip behind square on the leg side, past Woakes' full-length dive.
Very next ball Shanaka swats Jordan over long on for six! This is a beautiful strike...it's a length ball angled into him and he tucks into it, holding the pose as the ball sails into the stand.
OVER 18: SL 104/6 (Shanaka 26 Udana 5)
Rashid to finish off his allocation. Udana flicks him into the offside for a single before Shanaka sweeps down to fine leg for another. Udana attempts a sweep but only manages an under-edge down the leg side for another single.
Super spell from Rashid who ends with two for 17.
OVER 17: SL 100/6 (Shanaka 24 Udana 3)
Three dots in a row from Jordan to start the over, including a superb slower ball bouncer which absolutely bamboozles Shanaka. He's through the shot miles too early and the ball clatters into his elbow. Three off the over in the end which brings the hundred up for Sri Lanka. A little later than they might have hoped or expected.
OVER 15: SL 94/5 (Shanaka 22 Hasaranga 4)
Back-to-back boundaries row for Shanaka to start this Wood over! And they're almost mirror images - Wood drops a little too short and wide outside off and is carved through backward point. Shanaka then tries a horrid swipe to leg which he toe ends out to the mid-wicket fence for a single. Hasaranga punches the final ball out to deep point for one more.
OVER 14: SL 84/5 (Shanaka 13 Hasaranga 3)
Another superb over from Rashid and Sri Lanka are in serious trouble after the dismissal of Perera. Rashid attacking the stumps throughout and mixes up the traditional leg-breaks and googlies. Hasaranga times a nice drive off the fifth delivery but it's straight to the man on the extra cover boundary.
OVER 13: SL 79/4 (Shanaka 11 Perera 30)
Woakes returns. Perera snatches a single before Shanaka flicks into the leg side and they manage to run two after Roy misfields as he attacks the ball running in from the fence. Three dots in a row - including one which absolutely veered up off a length - before Shanaka crunches into the leg side for two off the last ball.
OVER 12: SL 74/4 (Shanaka 7 Perera 29)
Adil Rashid enters the attack. Perera nudges a single before a horrible drag down from Rashid which Shanaka only manages to mistime into the leg side for one. Perera shuffles on to the back foot and swats a single to midwicket. Then Shanaka moves across his stumps and nurdles into a gap on leg for two.
OVER 11: SL 69/4 (Shanaka 4 Perera 27)
Perera ends the boundary drought off the first ball of Wood's third over. The Durham paceman charges in from around the wicket, drops short and Perera top edges a hook over the ropes down at long leg for a maximum. He didn't have total control but won't be too fussed.
Wicket!!
Mendis lbw Livingstone 9. This is interesting...Captain Morgan wants some spin but it's Livingstone rather than Rashid who comes into the attack. And he has trapped Mendis bang in front! Mendis reviews but this is going to clatter into middle stump. It's a shocking review, that was absolutely plumb and he has to go.
FOW 49/3
OVER 7: SL 45/2 (Mendis 6 Perera 16)
It's all coming in ones and twos at the moment for Sri Lanka. At some point they're going to have to try to throw caution to the wind. Perera wants a change of bat, maybe that will change his luck? Nope, he mistimes into the leg side for another single. Mendis retains the strike with...you guessed it, a single off the last ball.
OVER 6: SL 39/2 (Mendis 2 Perera 14)
Curran starts with a leg side wide before Perera plays tip-and-run and the Sri Lankans scamper a single. Mendis pulls Curran into the leg side for another single. The ball looks like it's sticking in the pitch here - the tourists have struggled to middle anything so far other than Gunathilaka's crunching straight drive off Wood. Perera drags Curran for two off the penultimate ball and then nabs another single off the last delivery.
Wicket!!
Gunathilaka c Buttler b Jordan 19. Whoops! Jordan into the attack replacing Woakes and Gunathilaka opens the face to his first ball and sends it down to the third man boundary for four. But off his next ball he gets it all wrong, moving outside off and trying to smash it over fine leg...but he gets a top edge and it's the easiest of grabs for Buttler.
OVER 4: SL 26/1 (Gunathilaka 15 Perera 8)
Wood into the attack and he's up over 90mph straight away. Gunathilaka flicks a rising delivery off his hips into the leg side for a single. Wood then drops short to Perera who's a bit late on it and bottom edges an attempted pull down to short fine leg for a single.
Gunathilaka back on strike and he crunches a slightly over-pitched 94mph delivery straight back past Wood for four! Shot!! Then he follows up with a slashing drive over cover for four more. Ten off the over.
OVER 3: SL 16/1 (Gunathilaka 6 Perera 7)
Woakes continues to nag away with a tight line to Gunathilaka who tries, unsuccessfully, to give himself space and carve the Warwickshire man through the covers. They sneak a single before Perera slams Woakes for four past the despairing dive of Curran at mid-wicket. In fact on replay, Curran pretty much dived over that so Woakes is rightly frustrated. A deft little nudge down to long leg off the last ball sees Perera add two more to his tally.
OVER 2: SL 9/1 (Gunathilaka 5 Perera 1)
Gunathilaka rotates the strike off the first ball before Avishka succumbs to Curran. Perera gets off strike with his first delivery with a nurdle into the off side, before Gunathilaka crunches to the man on the cover boundary and takes two. Two leg-side wides from the over too before another Gunathilaka nabs the strike off the last ball.

OVER 1: SL 2/0 (Gunathilaka 1 Avishka 0)
A nice tight line from Woakes who forces Gunathilaka to defend the first couple. The opener charges the next ball but only manages to thrash it straight at the man at cover - no run. Woakes loses his radar and slings a wide down the leg side. The Sri Lankans sneak a single down the ground for the only runs off the bat in that first over. Good start from Woakes.
This is a quickfire series
There are two games on successive days at Cardiff, then a day off before the final game at the Ageas Bowl on Saturday. England play another three-match T20 series against Pakistan in July so will have a chance to look at different players and lineups ahead of the World Cup.

Without wanting to jinx it
New Zealand look to be cruising to a win now. They're 100 for two off 37 overs, chasing 139 off a minimum of 53. Williamson 26* and Taylor 34*.
It would be apt if these two could see New Zealand over the line here. Batting together, Williamson and Taylor have put on 3805 runs across their Test careers - more than any other pair of NZ batsmen. #WTCFinal

Hello
And welcome to our live coverage of the first T20 international between England and Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. This is the opening fixture in a three-match series which should provide both sides with some valuable preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup in October.
Eoin Morgan's side are currently the No 1-ranked T20 team in the world (Sri Lanka are down in eighth) and will be looking to add another limited-overs trophy to their cabinet later this year, to go with the 50-over World Cup they won in unforgettable fashion back in 2019.
Ben Stokes is not part of the England squad for this series - but he did play for Durham in the T20 Blast on Sunday...smashing 29 off 18 balls, taking a wicket and snaffling a superb catch. Not bad.
Jofra Archer and Reece Topley are also missing but England have been able to name a strong squad, including Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes - who has not played international cricket since the summer of 2020. Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan have both been passed fit to play despite injury scares.
Woakes has been picked for England in the shortest form for the first time since 2015 and is looking to throw his hat into the ring for T20 World Cup selection.
Woakes said: "It is nice to back with the team, especially with the T20 setup because I haven’t been here for a while," he said. "I thought I might have played my last, so it did come as a bit of a surprise. I am not just here to make up the numbers – if I get a go I will be trying to stake a claim."
These two sides play back-to-back games at Sophia Gardens before the final game of the series in Southampton. We'll have all the team news and reaction from the toss as soon as it happens.
