APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR P&Z BOARD: The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from those interested in filling an unexpired term as an alternate member on the Hernando County Planning and Zoning Commission, effective through Dec. 13, 2016.

Those applying for the volunteer position must be residents and registered voters in Hernando County. Applicants must also have computer access since all agenda packets are prepared and distributed digitally.

The Planning and Zoning Commission acts as an advisory board to the County Commission on matters pertaining to rezoning and other land-use issues.

Applications are available in the county administrator's office, Room 263, Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St., Brooksville; online at hernandocounty.us/bocc/committees.htm, or by calling (352) 754-4002. Completed applications must be returned to the office no later than 5 p.m. Friday.

FREE CONCERT TICKETS: Distribution of complimentary tickets for the next two concerts of the Community Performing Arts Series will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday — or until tickets are gone — at Mariner United Methodist Church, 7079 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

The two concerts are "The '60s Experience," a tribute to the 1960s, on Jan. 25, and "Back Home Again," a John Denver tribute, on Feb. 8.

VOLUNTEER WITH HOSPICE: HPH Hospice is recruiting volunteers to help with patient support at the Sturgill Hospice Care Center in Spring Hill, as well as volunteers to visit patients in their homes in the Brooksville area or assist the agency with clerical duties.

A two-part orientation will be provided to prospective volunteers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24 at the care center, 12242 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill. Attendance is mandatory both days. Lunch will be provided.

FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE: The Hernando County Recreation Department is selling tickets for its annual father/daughter dance, which will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 and 8 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville.

The event is for all ages. Substitute dads — grandfather, uncle, friend or older brother — are welcome. The event will include music, snacks and drinks.

Tickets cost $15 each and must be purchased in advance; no tickets will be sold at the door. Registration forms are available online at hernandocounty.us/parks_rec.

GONG SHOW: The Alzheimer's Family Organization will have its annual Gong Show at 6 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Jewish Community Center, 9841 Scenic Drive, Port Richey.

Dinner will be catered by Carrabba's Italian Grill. Along with the show, there will be raffles, door prizes, silent and raffle auctions, snacks and soft drinks.

Tickets for preferred seating are available for $40. Other seats are available for $30 and $25.

HAVE A SUPER BOWL SUNDAE: The Scarlet Belles at Tea invite area red and pink hatters to the annual Super Bowl Sundae IX open house from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Feb. 2 at Dairy Queen, 370 Suzanne Drive, Spring Hill.

Women who wear their colors will get 25 percent off their sundaes. Door prizes will be awarded every half-hour, and tickets will be available for drawings for two gift baskets, as well as a chance to win an ice cream cake.

There will be a drawing for those who bring donations for pet shelters, such as Purina Puppy and Kitten Chow, Purina Cat Chow, Pedigree dog food, Friskies and Fancy Feast pate (no chunks), cat litter, dog training pads, new hard rubber toys, antibacterial dish soaps, garbage bags, gloves and cleaning supplies, blankets, towels and other items.

Gift cards for pet stores and other stores are appreciated. Donations will go to local no-kill shelters, including the Humane Society of the Nature Coast, the SPCA of Hernando County and SPCA of the Suncoast.

JOIN HERNANDO YOUTH ORCHESTRA: Aspiring wind and string musicians between the ages of 6 and 18 are invited to join the Hernando Youth Orchestra.

The orchestra rehearses from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at DaySpring Church, 6000 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: The Timbertones Community Chorus of Timber Pines will award scholarships to graduating Hernando County seniors enrolled in vocal music classes or who are participating in vocal music activities.

This year, the chorus hopes to award a total of $8,000. Scholarships must be used to further music education.

Applicants will be asked about their musical goals and music background, and are required to have an accumulated grade-point average of 2.8. A letter of recommendation from a vocal music teacher at the high school is also required. Finalists will be asked to audition before a committee headed by Timbertones music director Roberta "Bobbi" Moger.

Applications are available at all county high school guidance offices or from music directors. The application deadline is Feb. 14.

Scholarship winners will be asked to perform at one or more of the Timbertones' spring concerts, April 11 to 13, where they will be presented with their awards. For information, contact Charles Burnim at cburnim@suffolk.edu.

SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM NOW SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS: The Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties is taking appointments for its school readiness program for families with low to moderate incomes.

Eligibility is determined by comparing federal poverty guidelines to both family size and income. Families may earn no more than 150 percent of the federal poverty level upon initial eligibility; a family of four must not exceed an annual income of $35,325.

GUN AND KNIFE SHOW: The Hernando Sportsman's Club will host its Winter Gun and Knife Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 25 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 Broad St., Brooksville.

The show will feature all types of new, used and antique firearms, knives and accessories for sale.

KIDS MARATHON: Registration is being accepted for the 2014 Hernando Five Points of Life Kids Marathon, which will be at 9 a.m. April 5 at Nature Coast Technical High School, 4057 California St., south of Brooksville. There is no cost for those who register before March 1.

Participants in kindergarten through eighth grade will run or walk the full 26.2-mile marathon, starting at the time of registration, logging their distance as they go. Then at the event on April 5, participants will celebrate their accomplishment and earn a medal at the finish line. All participants receive a T-shirt.

The annual event, started by LifeSouth Community Blood Centers as a way to raise awareness of the five ways to share life with others through the donation of blood, apheresis, marrow, cord blood, and organs and tissues. The marathon also promotes fitness and offers lessons in goal setting.
