Girls' Generation's Sooyoung Talks About Speaking Japanese For Her Upcoming Film

Sooyoung recently talked about her upcoming film “Memories of a Dead End.”

On March 25, a press conference was held for the film with actors Sooyoung, Tanaka Shunsuke, director Choi Hyun Young, and writer Yoshimoto Banana in attendance.

“Memories of a Dead End” is a romance film based on the book of the same name, written by Yoshimoto Banana. It follows the story of Yumi (played by Sooyoung), a Korean tourist who travels to Nagoya to meet her boyfriend, and what happens when she meets Nishiyama (played by Tanaka Shunsuke), the manager of a café located at the end of an alley.

In the film, Sooyoung acts while speaking Japanese. In response to this, Sooyoung stated, “I debuted in Japan when I was 12, so thankfully I was able to learn Japanese. Ever since, I thought that I’d be able to one day act while speaking Japanese.”

She continued, “When I first read the script for the film, I asked the director about [my character’s] command of the Japanese language. He then responded that my level of Japanese was perfect for the character. If I were an awkward Japanese speaker, it would have been more difficult, but it wasn’t a burden because I’m supposed to be good at Japanese in the movie as well. However, since the character is a Korean woman in the film, I had the assuring thoughts that even if there were moments when I would pronounce things incorrectly, it would be convincing. That’s why I wasn’t greatly burdened by acting while speaking Japanese.”

“Memories of a Dead End” is led by director Choi Hyun Young, who is known for his short film “The After…” (2009), and features actors such as Sooyoung, Tanaka Shunsuke, Ahn Bo Hyun, Dong Hyun Bae, Bae Noo Ri, and others.

The film is set to premiere on April 4.
