Why Did Bahrain Arrest A Top Human Rights Activist?

Top Bahraini human rights activist Maryam Al-Khawaja was detained on Saturday when she arrived in her home country to see her father, a dissident who is serving a life sentence and is currently on a hunger strike.

Al-Khawaja faces charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer at the airport, as well as charges related to a human rights campaign and insulting the king. Her father, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, was arrested in 2011 following anti-government protests.

HuffPost Live discussed the arrest this week with journalist Sara Yasin and Brian Dooley, director of the Human Rights Defenders program at Human Rights First. Watch the full HuffPost Live conversation here.
