Today marks World Pneumonia Day, a day during which the Forum of International Respiratory Societies, including the American Thoracic Society, raises awareness about the effect of this disease.

Pneumonia accounts for 16% of childhood deaths globally and is also a common cause of death or illness among the elderly, according to an ATS press release. However, the disease is largely preventable and treatable.

New CAP guidelines stress de-escalation

Recently updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of adults with community-associated pneumonia, or CAP, stressed the importance of de-escalation of antibiotic therapy and made stricter recommendations on when to use broad-spectrum antibiotics for the treatment of patients with CAP and risk factors for drug-resistant organisms.
