ROCKFORD Ill. (WIFR) -- Music is bringing people together for “Heroes Unplugged." An event supporting Guitars for Vets.

Recent graduate of the program Roy Glenn Wolf finds playing the guitar to help him cope with stress.

"It helps very much you'd be surprised. There are a lot of vets that need this program,” said Wolf.

During the ten week program vets take private lessons to learn guitar as a way to cope with life after war.

“We all know listening to music and making music is good for us and so this is a way we can help provide for that.” said Trish Rooney, event coordinator.

Guitars for vets operate 80 different chapters nationwide and Saturdays fundraiser raised money to give local veterans a brand new guitar when they finish the program.

“It’s our hope that they will continue music making,” said Rooney.

The community had the chance to enjoy music from local musicians like Paul Bronson, an acoustic guitar player who has been performing at “heroes unplugged” since it started.

“My father was a vet he was a post-Korea vet and he did serve. So it’s close to home with me and it’s a great thing to do and I wish I had more time to get involved in the program, “said Bronson.

To end the fundraiser, Vets from the program had a jam session to show off their new skills.

If you couldn’t attend the event, you can show your support by donating a guitar for the veterans at Kegel’s bike shop located on Charles Street in Rockford.
