Parents in Kansas City, Kansas, spent a very hot afternoon on the streets to protest the fact that their local pool isn't open. The protest was planned to voice concerns over the closure of the Parkwood Pool in Wyandotte County's Quindaro neighborhood."It's hot. We should be in the pool right now," said Da'Len Grigsby. For decades, the pool has been a haven for kids in the summertime."This is where we hung out," said Shirley Walton. "For them to take that away from us, it's not fair."The pool was filled with water to allow crews to make repairs, however, due to a shortage of lifeguards and other staff, officials in Wyandotte County made the decision that the pool would remain closed for a second year running. Reopening the pool has been a hot topic after a 13-year-old boy had to be pulled from the bottom of the pool this month. Authorities said the boy jumped the fence to get in. While he's still in critical condition, authorities said at last check he was showing no brain activity, and would remain on life support until parents decided otherwise. "Had this pool been opened, they would never have climbed the fence. They would have been able to come through the gate," Walton said.Residents in the neighborhood point to the incident as a reason why the pool should reopen to give kids in the Quindaro neighborhood something to do this summer. "This is our area. This is our neighborhood. You can't take this from us," Walton said.Meanwhile, directly across the street from the protest, county officials set up a lifeguard recruitment training table hoping to fill vacant spots needed for the pool to reopen.
