FINKSBURG, MD — An 89-year-old man died after he was hit by a falling tree Monday, according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. He was in his driveway at the time, officials said.

Harry Swan, 89, of Finksburg, was pronounced deceased at the scene Monday evening, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel were called to the 2900 block of Bloom Road, where Swan was trapped under a tree, at 6:24 p.m. on Monday, July 22.

When Carroll County emergency medical services and law enforcement personnel arrived, the tree was moved; but in spite of taking life-saving measures, officials said Swan died.

High winds from a thunderstorm knocked the tree over while he had been in the driveway, investigators said.

Carroll County was under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30 p.m., and a tornado warning until 4 p.m. Later in the evening, there was another tornado warning, from 9:30 to 9:45 p.m., and a severe thunderstorm warning from 9:45 to 10:15 p.m. in Carroll County.

Because nobody saw the tree fall, authorities said that Swan's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation.
