Northbrook-based Firm Celebrates 25 Years in Business

Scott Simpson Design + Build marks 25 years with new name & new logo highlighting its integrated offerings

Scott Simpson Builders marks 25 years in business with its new name, Scott Simpson Design + Build (SSDB), a title that reflects the firm’s integrative offerings. Impressive custom homes, dramatic remodels and restorations, and an impeccable reputation with both homeowners and trade professionals, make SSDB one of the most respected design-build firms throughout Chicago and its northern suburbs.

“As our unified services expanded, our former name, Scott Simpson Builders, no longer represented the full scope of work we offer,” says Founder and Partner Scott Simpson. “As we reflect on our past and look ahead to the next 25 years, we want to ensure we are known for who we are, what we do, and that our clients understand how integral they are to our process.”

Simpson, a carpenter by trade with a degree in psychology, knew at a young age that he wanted to own his own business and had to work with his hands. Thus, in 1994 Scott Simpson Builders was born. Shortly after launching, Thomas “TK” Kenny joined Scott as partner. A fellow craftsman by trade, with a degree in English, TK’s skill and mindfulness solidified the team and drove the desired culture Scott longed for at his company. They had a shared appreciation for the craft and, even more so, the clients who would forever live in and love the homes they built. Together, over the past 25 years, Scott and TK have built some of the North Shore’s most distinguished homes.

Despite their success as builders, they saw fault in the traditional process of homebuilding, most notably when it came to aligning the client’s needs, wants and budget. Without a collaborative role in the architecture process, Scott and TK had to fight to keep projects from going over budget and straying from the timeline.

Driven to deliver the most comprehensive experience for their distinguished clientele, Scott and TK recruited the services of an award-winning architect team led by Amy Mangold. To test the vitality of this newly formed design-build team, they built Northbrook’s first geothermal house for the most discriminating client of them all: TK himself. From there, the design-build team was born, and has neither gone over budget nor missed a deadline without client-driven redirection.

“Joining this team was the culmination of a life-long dream: to practice collaborative architecture with cerebral partners that support my values of honesty, simplicity, creativity and quality,” says Amy Mangold, Principal Architect at Scott Simpson Design + Build. “Ours is a practice where clients become thinkers and co-conspirators of great design.”

Having architecture in-house allows SSDB to streamline the process by offering integrated design-build services and consult for the client every step of the way– from the first meeting to groundbreaking and finally move-in day. The team boasts a referral base of every single client with whom they have ever worked and happily present the list to any prospect that walks through their doors. Their business is one built on authenticity and transparency, values they’ve always upheld but felt were not reflected well enough through the former brand.

“The devotion we have for our clients leads to many sleepless nights and motivates every aspect of our work,” says TK. “We wanted the new look of Scott Simpson Design + Build to not only demonstrate our services, but to also convey the genuine care we feel for our clients. We understand that they are trusting us with one of the biggest decisions they will ever make and we want them to know we don’t take that task lightly.”

Aesthetically, the new look of Scott Simpson Design + Build demonstrates the firm’s beliefs and mantra. Incorporated into the new logo is the “Eban,” a symbol that translates to fence and signifies safety, security, and love. The fence symbolically separates and secures a family living in the home from the outside world. For Scott Simpson Design + Build, this symbol perfectly demonstrates their commitment to building a forever home that changes their clients’ lives.
