Trusting Oral Fads is Major Cause of Unintended Damage to Teeth and Gums, says Dr. Farzad Feiz

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- An October 3article on CNN Health explains why people should not brush their teeth with salt or baking soda. The article points out that both agents are mildly abrasive; so while they may be good at removing surface stains and might have been justifiable before the invention of modern toothpastes, they are also good at stripping the enamel off of teeth if used often. This can expose the yellow-colored dentin layer underneath the enamel. Dr. Farzad Feiz of California Dental Care and Calabasas Dental Group says that regularly using any substance other than dentist-approved toothpaste to brush teeth is likely to expose the user to unnecessary risks and could very well do a lot more harm than good.

Dr. Feiz says that it is good that patients are interested in caring for their teeth, but that fads are often dangerous. Toothpaste brands approved by proper dental authorities have been specially formulated to be both effective and safe to use, he adds. Dr. Feiz notes that patients who are not seeing the results they want with their toothpaste should consult their dentist for two reasons. The first is that it is possible that another underlying issue is present; the second is that a dentist can provide far more effective whitening than over-the-counter products.

Dr. Feiz says that teeth whitening procedures administered by professional dental clinics are often more than enough to restore lost luster to patients' smiles. Of course, for some patients, prior damage or potential vulnerabilities in their teeth may require more elaborate treatments, he adds. In cases such as these, he continues, patients may require dental crowns, veneers, or even extractions and implants for teeth that are too far gone. He explains that crowns and veneers can be outstanding options for patients with teeth that may be too deeply stained to be corrected by standard whitening treatments or as a protective cover for at-risk teeth.

Dr. Feiz adds that for patients who experience significant tooth decay, trauma, or other problems, it may be time to remove and replace the affected teeth. Patients suffering from severe tooth pain may have underlying conditions that require treatment. He says if the worst should happen and a patient needs to replace one or more teeth, it is highly important that patients do not delay as this can only compound whatever ailments a patient may have.
For patients who may be wondering about the best ways to avoid tooth extractions and prosthetics, Dr. Feiz says prevention is key. He adds that proper brushing and flossing after each meal along with routine checkups with a good family dentist can go a long way in keeping one's teeth healthy and smile bright.
