A special online session from XpoNorth will hear how internationally published author Bridget McNulty turned personal and painful experience into a book to help others.

Ms McNulty will join leading Scottish literary agent and regular guest at XpoNorth's annual Inverness creative industries conference, Jenny Brown, for the webinar event on Wednesday, July 28.

The South African author will be sharing her insights into how she turned a need for support into an internationally published book, The Grief Handbook.

When her mother died suddenly, Ms McNulty could not find the support that she needed. Looking to help others facing a similar problem, she set about writing The Grief Handbook to ensure that there was practical and sympathetic advice for anyone navigating grief. The Grief Handbook is being published in South Africa, the UK and the US on July 13 2021, and is the first grief handbook to combine personal, lived experience with expert guidance for navigating loss.

As part of her writing process Ms McNulty consulted professional experts and learned the art of writing about personal experience and how to make that marketable in the writing world. During this free-to-attend webinar, she will discuss how she identified a gap from her own needs and turned to her writing to fill a space within the publishing market.

XpoNorth project manager Alex Smith said: “Bridget McNulty has done some fantastic work with us at XpoNorth in the past through brand storytelling workshops and working with our LevelUp! programme supporting creative industry students at the University of the Highlands and Islands.

"We are delighted to welcome her back to take part in what will be a fascinating insight into how to effectively channel personal experience through written word. Bridget will be joined in conversation by one of Scotland’s top literally agents, Jenny Brown, who will bring practical advice and support for writers looking to get published.”
