Charles E. Carmichael Sr., 1936-2020

LONGWOOD, Fla. — Charles Edwin Carmichael Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, under the care of Hospice of the Comforter at Longwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Oct. 11, 1936, in Orangeville, Ohio, a son of Mary Katherine Schweiss and John Standley Carmichael.

Chuck was a 1954 graduate of Kinsman High School. He also attended Ohio University, where he played baseball for the Ohio Bobcats.

He acquired a love of construction as a teenager, working for Johnny Mayborn in Kinsman, Ohio. He turned that love into a lifelong career, starting with The Edward J. DeBartolo Company in 1961. He was self-employed for many years as a commercial contractor.

One of his greatest joys during that time was being awarded the contract for the construction of the sanctuary at the Howland United Methodist Church, where he and his family were active members for many years.

He began his corporate career working for the Tamarkin Company, Valu King grocery chain in 1978, followed by Giant Eagle and Phar-Mor. In 1992, Chuck took a job with Office Depot and moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where he lived until his wife’s death in 2009, when he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to live with his daughter, Kimberly, and her family.

Chuck loved traveling, playing golf, dining out and entertaining. He was a true storyteller, with a larger-than-life dry sense of humor. One of his greatest joys was sitting around the Sunday dinner table, talking for hours.

Survivors include his four loving children, Dawn C. (Tedd) Lee of Sunrise, Fla., Kimberly C. (Colin) Murray of Apopka, Fla., Charles E. (Valerie) Carmichael Jr. of Charleston, S.C., and Amy S. (Andrew) Bertilacci of Niles. He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Adam (Brittney) D. Murray, Colin W. Murray Jr., Kyle (Sara) C. Murray, Prospero C. Bertilacci, Nickolaus C. Lee, Amanda S. Bertilacci and Trevor A. Lee; great-grandson, “The little guy” Max T. Murray; and four sisters, Martha A. Elser of Cortland, Elizabeth J. (James) McKitrick of Vienna, Ohio, Gerry E. (Kenneth) Stafford of Kinsman, and Mable J. Zak of Newport, R.I.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, J. Sharlene Carmichael, whom he married Sept. 7, 1957. He was also preceded by his parents; three sisters, Mary Marguerite Carmichael, Elsie Carmichael and Nancy Genera; and three brothers, Carl, Frank and George Carmichael; and his granddaughter, Jillian M. Murray.

A private family memorial service is pending.

Chuck had a very big heart and gave to many charities throughout his life. Send a memorial contribution in Chuck’s name to your charity of choice or to your local hospice.

Arrangements handled by Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home.
