Heart rates were through the roof on Tuesday as football fans watched the World Cup penatly shoot out between the England and Colombia.

Gareth Southgate's side became the first ever Three Lions side to win after extra time, sending the nation into a frenzy.

The tense Tuesday game literally set pulses racing, fans have now revealed, as they shared the results from their Fitbits and Apple and Garmin watches.

People who wear the devices around their wrists to measure their fitness via their heart rate and movement showed the Fitbits were fooled into thinking their owners were in the gym.

Some heart rates were higher watching the England game than they were when they had exercised.

Phil Walder, from London, posted a picture showing a resting heart rate of between 50 and 60 beats per minute.

Later in the day he had a pulse peak of about 100bpm shortly after midday, when he worked out.

But later in the evening, it rocketed to about 120bpm.

He tweeted: 'My heart rate monitor today. Lunchtime in the gym. This evening ... penalties!'  

Andrew Stuart's pulse reached 125bpm. 

He wrote: 'My heart rate, six weeks after heart valve surgery, during England World Cup penalties.' 

Southgate's team were 1-0 up until the last minute of extra time when Colombian Yerry Mina scored in the 93rd minute.

There were no goals in extra time and the match went to penalties, which England won 4-3 after a heroic save by Jordan Pickford from Everton FC. 

After beating Colombia England will face Sweden in Russia on Saturday.
