11 more COVID-19 deaths reported in South Carolina, total cases now 6,489

State health officials said Saturday, May 2, that an additional 11 people have died in South Carolina from COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 267 deaths.

The S.C. Dept. of Health and Environmental Control says of the 11 deaths ,nine were elderly and two were middle-aged.

DHEC also revealed Saturday an additional 226 people have been diagnosed with the virus statewide, making 6,489 cases since early March.

DHEC estimates that as of April 30, about 78 percent of people who've been diagnosed with COVID-19 have since recovered, while about 22 percent remain sick. Those percentages do not factor in deaths.

The agency also says 6,573 hospital beds are available and 4,824 are in use in the state. Of those in use, DHEC estimates 370 are occupied by COVID-19 patients or people suspected of having the virus.

As of April 30, a total of 16,320 total tests for COVID-19 have been conducted in the state by public and private laboratories.
