FARGO (KFGO) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem has granted the city of Fargo’s request to authorize the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate the actions of former Fargo Deputy Police Chief Todd Osmundson during the May 30 riot in downtown Fargo.
Osmundson admitted to carrying an open container of beer and shouting at police while in plainclothes. He said he was doing intelligence work, but had not informed superiors. The BCI will look into claims that Osmundson publicly consumed alcohol and incited a riot.
Spokeswoman Liz Brocker tells KFGO News that Stenehjem has assigned a supervising BCI agent to the case. “The BCI will follow its normal procedures and complete a report at the conclusion of its review.”
Criminal charges against Osmundson were declined after the police department concluded an internal review, but the city says that to ensure impartiality, it’s important to seek an independent inquiry.
Osmundson resigned in June, after 31 years with the department.
