MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — Preparations are well underway for a Presidential visit to a Central Wisconsin airport.
For the second time in two years, the Central Wisconsin Airport will be hosting President Donald Trump for a campaign event. The “Great American Comeback” event is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th at the airport on 400 CWA Dr. In preparation for the event, the airport released a list of information on access to the airport the day of the event.
Airport Director Brian Grefe says those in the Mosinee area should expect lots of traffic congestion around the airport Thursday. “We’re opening our parking lot up at noon so people can start parking. We have a limited capacity of just over 800 spots. It’s first come first serve. After that, there will be some overflow parking in Crystal Finishings. I highly, highly encourage ridesharing, carpooling, taking a taxi, taking an Uber or Lyft because there’s going to be a lot of congestion on the roadway.”
While there will be a lot of traffic at the airport, Grefe says the visit won’t impact regular airline travel outside of some potential flight delays. All flights are expected to run as scheduled as the President is arriving between flights in the evening. Grefe recommends that passengers give themselves plenty of extra time to arrive at the airport for their flights on Thursday.
The visit on Thursday will take place in a hangar at the airport, but there are some changes from the event that was held in 2018 according to Grefe. “It’s in a different hangar. So it’s in the sixth based operator Central Wisconsin aviation at 400 CWA Dr. So it will be closer to our parking lot, that’s why we’re using our main parking lot.
“A major difference this year compared to last time is we will not be allowing parking on the grass. Because of the damage, it causes and also egresses security reasons. The grass parking we had two years ago will not be available this year.”
Grefe also says its possible that those with tickets may not be able to get into the event depending as the airport does not know the number of tickets being released. President Trump is expected to speak at CWA Thursday at 8 p.m.
