Highland Park celebrates its annual day of service
The public is invited to join their fellow community members from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Recreation Center of Highland Park as the village celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the 11th annual day of service and celebration.
This multigenerational community event will be held to honor Dr. King's life, which was devoted to social service, equality, social justice, economic advancement and opportunity for all.
The event will offer the opportunity to take part in purposeful service projects and will include entertainment for all ages. In previous years, 30 or more projects have been available.
The day is free to all and is presented by the city's Human Relations Advisory Group and the Park District of Highland Park.
Service vendors are seeking the following donations, which should be dropped off between 10 a.m. and noon:
• Toiletries (hotel sized for Dignity Bags)
• Nonexpired and nonperishable food items (Moraine Township Food Pantry)
• Winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves (Tree Hugs)
• New stuffed animals (Zac's Zoo)
• Bicycles in any condition (Working Bikes)
The goal of the event is to give area residents a chance to turn community concerns into citizen action, and to turn a day off into a "day on."
The Recreation Center of Highland Park is at 1207 Park Avenue West, Highland Park.
