Free Museum Day And Vendy Awards | Manhattan This Weekend

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are some of the most interesting events Manhattan has to offer.

NEW YORK, NY — No matter what you're looking for this weekend, Manhattan has something to offer. Highlights include free visits to a number of museums, a food cart competition on Governor's Island and a lower Manhattan Oktoberfest celebration.

SUBMERGE - NYC Marine Science Festival 2018

Neighborhood: Hell's Kitchen

What: SUBMERGE is a "FREE day-long science extravaganza devoted to raising awareness about our coastal waters." Visitors can participate in science experiments, catch-and-release fishing, kayaking and more water-related activities. The festival staff will conduct interactive demonstrations related to marine science and engineering throughout the event.

"Museum Day"

Neighborhood: Various

What: More than two dozen cultural institutions in the city are waiving their admission fees Saturday, Sept. 22 as part of the Smithsonian Magazine's annual "Museum Day."

New Yorkers and tourists can peruse galleries of Himalayan art, explore air and space craft aboard a World War II aircraft carrier or even taste, touch and smell exhibits while learning about culinary history.

2018 Vendy Awards

Neighborhood: Governor's Island

What: The competition is fierce in this annual event that determines New York City's best food carts and trucks. Vendors from all over New York City will compete for titles such as best breakfast cart, best dessert and the coveted Vendy Cup.

Where: Governor's Island. Take the ferry from the Wall Street or Downtown Brooklyn piers.

When: Saturday, Sept. 22 from 12:30-5 p.m.

5 Boro Pizza Challenge

Neighborhood: Various

What: Test your knowledge of the New York City subway system and get rewarded with delicious pizza. The 5 Boro Pizza Challenge is currently in its third year of existence and serves as a fundraiser for safe streets advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. Teams must plot out the best route to hit five pizza spots in five different boroughs as quickly as possible and take down a slice at each location.

Where: Meetup is at the Red Cube at 140 Broadway near Liberty Street.

When: Saturday, Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.- 9 p.m.

Escape New York

Neighborhood: Washington Heights

What: This event will actually force New Yorkers to leave Manhattan and get some much-needed fresh air and exercise. The annual Escape New York bike ride urges New York cyclists to take the George Washington Bridge to the foreign land of New Jersey. There are a number of different routes to follow, including the demanding 100-mile Century Challenge and the beginner-friendly Bergen Spin (25 miles).

Where: Check in at Rapha SoHo on Friday between 6:30-9:30 p.m.

When: Saturday Sept. 22.

OktoberFest NYC 2018 at Watermark

Neighborhood: FiDi

What: Celebrate OktoberFest at the Watermark — a sprawling 3,500-square-foot-venue at Pier 15 in lower Manhattan. The bar will be serving up authentic German beer and giant pretzels. Different ticket packages can be purchased depending on how much alcohol you are trying to consume.

Where: 78 South Street near Pier 15

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m.- 12 a.m.
