About 50 protesters gathered outside of East Islip High School Thursday to express their anger and heartbreak over the grand jury's decision not to charge the officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor.
They lit candles and chanted "Black Lives Matter" in honor of Taylor's life.
More than six months after Taylor was shot to death after Louisville police officers broke down her apartment door while executing a warrant, a Kentucky grand jury decided to indict only one of the three officers involved. He was indicted of first degree wanton endangerment for shooting into an apartment next toTaylor's.
Demonstrators call it a slap on the wrist for taking a life.
"A wanton endangerment is a class D felony. That is the equivalent of being caught shoplifting. That does not hold any weight in America," said Bobby Smith.
None of the three officers involved with Taylor's death were charged directly with her killing. Protesters say it's just another example of unequal justice that's been going on for many years.
The demonstrators say Black lives do not matter to the justice system and are demanding charges against the officers.
The protesters say they will continue to raise their voices against racial injustice.
