Back-to-school season brings familiar faces back to the small screen on streaming services. A few original series, “Mr. Corman” and “The Chair,” are fittingly focused on educators.

Here are some of the highlights of what to binge in August. Grab some popcorn, claim your favorite spot on the couch and check out what’s new on streaming services. (Stateside premiere dates are listed.)

'Modern Love' on Amazon Prime

“Modern Love” returns August 13 with eight episodes in Season 2 with stories featuring familiar actors, including Minnie Driver, Kit Harrington, Tobias Menzies, Sophie Okonedo and Anna Paquin.

The anthology series, based on the New York Times column of the same name, conveys themes related to relationships, emotions, betrayals and revelations.

In this season, a woman must decide what to do about her late husband’s vintage car, one of the last connections to him; a middle school girl turns to social media quizzes as she questions her sexuality; and two parents, divorced for many years, reignite their old flame.

Fans of “Game of Thrones” may want to look for Harrington, while “True Blood” and “Flack” fans can get excited about another TV outing for Paquin.

Aug. 6, “S.O.Z. Soldiers or Zombies”: Craving more TV zombies? See a wanted drug lord and a new breed of zombies battling for survival. How’d that happen? Without giving away too much, let’s just say that TV trope about a military experiment gone wrong makes another appearance. Eight, 30-minute episodes make up this Mexican Amazon original thriller series with actors Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Horatio Garcia Rojas and Toby Schmitz from series such as “Snowfall,” “Narcos: Mexico” and “Black Sails.” (With English subtitles.)

Aug. 6, “Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary”: Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan is front and center in this five-part documentary series in which he shares the sometimes rocky road to success. Who needs backstage passes when you can watch the country music star behind the scenes on this IMDbTV original on Prime?

“Val,” Aug. 6, documentary about Val Kilmer; “Annette,” Aug. 20, musical drama about a standup comedian (Adam Driver), his opera singer wife (Marion Cotillard) and their gifted two-year-old (Devyn McDowell).

“Mr. Corman,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, lands Aug. 6. The 10-episode series written and produced by the “3rd Rock from The Sun” and “Inception” actor is about a fifth-grade teacher in San Fernando Valley who dreamed of a career in music. Gordon-Levitt’s character struggles through anxiety, loneliness and doubt while dealing with an ex-fiance who has moved out and a high school buddy who has moved in.

July 30, “Watch the Sound with Mark Ronson”: DJ and producer Mark Ronson (the man behind “Uptown Funk,” featuring Bruno Mars) shares behind-the-scenes stories about making music and also how far producers and creators will go to find that perfect sound in this six-part documentary series.

Aug, 27, “See,” Season 2: Jason Momoa returns in an eight-episode season as Baba Voss, a figure living in the far future when humans have lost their sense of sight. In this fantasy drama with a “Game of Thrones” vibe, Baba Voss is fighting to reunite his family and get away from the war and politics that surround him. Want more Momoa? Keep reading.

“CODA,” Aug. 13, coming-of-age story about a high school senior (Emilia Jones) who is the only hearing person in her deaf family.

“Titans,” Season 3: This action series makes its debut Aug. 12 on HBO Max in a shift from DC Universe streaming service. This season follows young heroes including Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), Kory Anders (Anna Diop), Rachel Roth (Teagan Croft) to Gotham City as they find where they belong while encountering new characters, such as Blackfire (Damaris Lewis). Three episodes will be released on the premiere date with one episode to be released every Thursday through Oct. 21.

Aug. 10, “Hard Knocks ‘21: Dallas Cowboys”: All right, Dallas Cowboys fans! The latest season of the five-episode documentary series from HBO Sports and NFL Films follows the Cowboys through training camp.

Aug. 12, “The Hype”: Reality competition series puts 10 streetwear professionals to the test and challenges them to deliver the goods (designs and entrepreneurial savvy) in eight episodes. Look for Offset, Cardi B, Wiz Khalifa and other music figures on this show.

Aug. 19, “Sweet Life: Los Angeles”: Issa Rae’s unscripted series makes its debut as it follows a group of young Black friends as they try to achieve success in South Los Angeles. Fans who know Rae from her HBO series “Insecure" will want to see her latest project.

Movies coming to HBO Max:

“The Suicide Squad,” Aug. 5, latest installment about a degenerate group of DC characters, including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Bloodsport (Idris Elba); “Reminiscence,” Aug. 20, sci-fi action thriller about a private investigator (Hugh Jackman) who helps clients access lost memories. Both films are only available on the ad-free HBO Max plan.

'Nine Perfect Strangers'

In ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ nine very different people arrive at Tranquillum House, a secluded retreat run by the mysterious wellness guru Masha, played by Nicole Kidman, shown.

“Nine Perfect Strangers,” starring Nicole Kidman, premieres Aug. 18 on Hulu. Nine city dwellers attend a 10-day retreat at a health-and-wellness resort run by Masha (Kidman) in this eight-episode mystery-drama series based on the book by Liane Moriarty. The guests are looking for healing and transformation from their stress-filled city lives. Melissa McCarthy, Regina Hall and Bobby Cannavale are also in the cast.

Also on Hulu:

Aug. 31, “Only Murders in the Building”: Comedic murder mystery stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez who portray New York City residents obsessed with true crime who then become involved in one. The 10-episode series follows the trio as they discover mysteries about their Manhattan apartment building.

Movie coming to Hulu:

“Homeroom,” Aug. 12, documentary about the Oakland High School Class of 2020 as students navigate a year that enters a pandemic.

'The Chair'

“The Chair” arrives Aug. 20, just in time for the new school year. With “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Killing Eve” actress Sandra Oh in the starring role, Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor and David Morse also appear in this six-episode dramedy about the chairman of the English department at a prestigious university.

Oh’s character faces challenges as the first woman to chair the department and one of the few staff members of color. Actress Amanda Peet is writer, showrunner and an executive producer of the series.

“Cooking With Paris,” Aug. 4: She’s back. Paris Hilton takes viewers on a six-episode ride as she tries new recipes and cooking techniques. Don’t laugh. We all know someone like Paris.

“Bake Squad,” Aug. 11: This eight-episode reality competition might be more appealing to your taste. Watch as four bakers selected by Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi vie to be chosen to create the dessert for someone’s special day.

Movies coming to Netflix:

“Beckett,” Aug. 13, action thriller about an American tourist (John David Washington) who finds himself at the center of a dangerous political conspiracy in Greece; “Sweet Girl,” Aug. 20, action thriller about a family man (Jason Momoa) seeking justice for the people responsible for his wife’s death while protecting his daughter (Isabela Merced).

These are just some of the series and films arriving on streaming services in August. Whether you like documentaries, reality competitions, comedies or dramas, options are available so sit back and enjoy.
