The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has identified the deputy placed on leave while authorities investigate the Sept. 18 fatal shooting of a West Ashley resident.

Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy Nicholas Vecchione is on administrative leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates the shooting of Jason Husted.

Authorities say Husted, 47, repeatedly fired a gun on Mona Avenue between Glendale Drive and Church Creek Drive during the early morning Sept. 18. This damaged surrounding houses and vehicles, according to Capt. Roger Antonio.

After deputies arrived, there was an exchange of gunfire. Antonio said Husted shot the side mirror of a deputy's squad car before he was shot and incapacitated by Vecchione.

Husted was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. No one else was injured in the shooting, Antonio said.

Vecchione was placed on administrative leave while SLED investigates, which is department protocol.

SLED's investigative findings will be submitted to the 9th Circuit Solicitor's Office to determine whether Vecchione should face charges in the shooting.

Vecchione has been with the sheriff's office since May 12, 2017.

He was awarded a medal for lifesaving by the department in 2019 after helping paramedics stabilize a North Charleston victim who was shot twice in the head in November 2018, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.
