LOWELL, MA — A coronavirus field hospital is again in the works in Lowell, Gov. Charlie Baker said Thursday, more than six months after one was shut down due to lack of need.

Lowell's will be the second field hospital of the virus's second wave in Massachusetts, joining one in Worcester that is set to begin taking patients Sunday. Lowell General Hospital will partner with the state on the hospital.

The hospital will again be set up in UMass Lowell's Recreation Center and is due to open by early January. It will provide additional beds for patients who are past the most acute stage of the virus.

The first field hospital was set up in April amid the virus's first wave in Massachusetts. It operated for a month before being shut down.

About 700 students lived on the UMass Lowell campus this fall, and that number is expected to increase to about 2,000 in the spring.
