Volleyball Roundup: BBE holds off Paynesville in home opener

Jaguars improve to 3-0 with 3-1 win over Bulldogs

BROOTEN — After two road sweeps to start the 2020 season, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa was finally able to hold serve on its home court.

Playing Central Minnesota Conference rival Paynesville on Tuesday, the seventh-ranked (Class A) Jaguars won a battle of unbeatens with a 3-1 victory.

BBE won 25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14.

Ava Mueller and Karissa Jones had double-digit kills for the Jaguars with 13 and 12, respectively. BBE picked apart the Bulldogs’ serve-receive with 17 aces, led by seven from Kylie Winter and four from Emily Kern. Karsee Kampsen set the offensive tone with 31 set assists, and libero Emily Kern anchored the defense with 29 digs.

Natalie Riley and Kyleigh Tangen each had six kills to lead Paynesville, with Riley also chipping in with a team-best 14 digs. Aubrey Spanier came up with 12 set assists, two ace serves and six digs.

Both teams are on the road Tuesday, Oct. 20, with BBE at Eden Valley-Watkins and Paynesville at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

Down 2-0 to winless Kimball, Eden Valley-Watkins was able to rally and win in a five-set thriller, 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 15-7.

Lindsey Wirz had an EV-W-best 10 kills, followed by nine from McKenna Moehrle. Wirz also had a team-high 22 digs.

EV-W returns home on Tuesday, Oct. 20 against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Willmar earned its third sweep of the season after a dominating win at Tech.

Abby Stark led the Cardinals with 27 assists, seven digs and six of the team’s 12 ace serves. Sydney Schnichels put up a team-high 13 kills.

Madelyn Gregory paced the visitors with five ace blocks. Marissa Rosen and Mackenzie Knofczynski each added four ace blocks. Bailey Olson chipped in with 10 digs and six kills.

With setter Lydia Larson gone on a college visit, Tuesday’s match offered a chance for Willmar to mix up the lineup.

“Our setter was gone tonight, so our libero was setting,” said Cardinals head coach Traci Grussing. “It was nice. It gave a few different people a chance to play different spots.”
