Britain is to open a new military base in Bahrain, both countries announced, its first permanent base in the Middle East since it formally withdrew from the region in 1971.
The new base is part of a deal to increase cooperation in tackling security threats in the Middle East, ministers said Friday.
The agreement was reached at the annual Manama Dialogue regional security summit in Bahrain.
It means Britain will have a place to plan and to store equipment and will be able to add to the four mine-hunter warships based in Mina Salman Port, where Britain currently uses US facilities.
Defense Secretary Michael Fallon described the £15 million ($23 million) facility as “a permanent expansion of the Royal Navy’s footprint” that will ensure Britain can send more ships and bigger vessels into the Gulf. “We will now be based again in the Gulf for the long term.”
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond emphasized his country’s historic links to the Gulf in announcing the plans. “In a globalized world, our domestic security and prosperity depends on developments beyond our shores. Your security concerns are our security concerns,” Hammond said.
Britain withdrew from bases in the Gulf in 1971 as part of its plan to pull out from “East of Suez.”
Nicholas Houghton, head of the British armed forces, said: “It’s the strategic importance of this. Rather than just being seen as a temporary deployment to an area for a specific operational purpose, this is more symbolic of the fact that Britain does enjoy interests in the stability of this region.”
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Khalid Al-Khalifa said the deal “reaffirms our joint determination to maintain regional security and stability in the face of challenging circumstances.”
Khalid added: “Bahrain looks forward to the early implementation of today’s arrangement, and to continuing to work with the UK and other partners to address threats to regional security.”

Who does this benefit? Not us and not ordinary Bahrainis either. Our navy doesn't have enough ships to protect Gibraltar, the Falklands or even our own coast any more thanks to Cameron's brutal defence cuts. And yet these cretins think protecting some Gulf despot who doesn't even have any oil ought to be a priority for the British taxpayer. Not to mention the risk of an attack by some Hezbollah style armed group.

It protects Bahrain's monarchy against its own people ;)

Who does this benefit?

The Bahraini Monarch.

Most of Bahrain's Police and Military is ex-Pakistani Service members some say 30% others quote up to even 50%. The Arab Spring that hit Bahrain there was wide-spread media advertising in Pakistan looking for recruits for Bahrain's National Guard and "Special Forces" (fancy name for Riot Police).

Side note, more foreigners are part of Bahrain's Security and Intelligence Services than Bahrain's own Shia population.

The Bahraini Protesters were met with a heavy hand by the Pakistani dominated Security Forces, abet orders from above. The Protesters retaliated by lynching Pakistani Laborers.

If you become too reliant on someone that's not a good thing. Bahrain is just spreading it's wings and getting together with everyone so that the Monarchy can stay a little longer.

Most of the Sunni dominated government believes that the protesters are urged on by the Iranians, as the majority of Bahrain is Shia. The UK they view is an additional counterweight to any foreign (Iranian) influence on Bahrain's Arab Spring.

Last time the Americans built a base in KSA, it lead to the creation of Al-Qaeda.....rest i leave it to your imagination.

Bahrain houses the USN's 5th Fleet.

The UK will get something for this, I guarantee it.

1. Bahrain's Sovereign Wealth Fund
2. Some other Gulf Arab State's Sovereign Wealth Fund
3. Preferential Oil Price
4. Preferential Natural Gas Price
5. Covert facilities/ Cooperation

International Relations, which this is, is all about "You scratch my back, i'll scratch yours. You guys will get something.

You know that the US gave full intelligence gathering responsibilities of Karachi to the UK?

Side note, do you Brits write defence instead of defense?
