ROCKVILLE, MD — For the second time in less than two weeks, Montgomery County recorded no new coronavirus deaths.

The state's most populous jurisdiction reported its first coronavirus-related death on March 21. Daily deaths peaked at 30 on April 27 — according to the county's coronavirus data — and has consistently been in the single digits since June 6.

As of Wednesday, the local death toll remains at 714. That figure, however, doesn't include the 38 others whose deaths were linked to the virus, but never confirmed by a lab test. They are considered "probable deaths."

The number of people who've been infected by COVID-19 has hit 15,400. That's an increase of 68 cases overnight.

"We're in a better place than we were. A couple weeks ago, the numbers would have been close to two-and-a-half to three times these numbers," County Executive Marc Elrich said during a coronavirus videoconference Wednesday. "But we've reached another plateau, so to speak ... we still have a ways to go."

The county — which entered Phase Two of its recovery plan on June 19 — continues to have the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 19,285, according to the latest figures.

Statewide, there have been 70,861 coronavirus cases, 3,149 confirmed deaths, and 126 "probable deaths." Of the 398 people being hospitalized for the virus, 136 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Gov. Larry Hogan said he wants each jurisdiction to test at least 10 percent of its population.

During Wednesday's videoconference, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the county was on track to meet the statewide goal later that day. That translates to some 110,000 people receiving tests. Elrich said that estimate doesn't include people who've been tested multiple times, and thinks the new number would be between 120,000 and 125,000.
