Chicago Firefighter Dies From Coronavirus Complications

CHICAGO, IL – A Chicago firefighter has died from complications of the new coronavirus, officials announced late Tuesday.

In a post on the Chicago Fire Department Twitter account, CFD spokesman Larry Langford announced Mario Araujo, a member of CFD Truck Company 25, died Tuesday evening. Araujo began working as a firefighter with CFD in 2003 and spent most of his career with Truck Company 25.

Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Richard Ford released a statement in response to Araujo's death.

"CFD members put themselves in harm's way without hesitations to selflessly uphold the oath they took to be there for every person they encounter during an emergency situation," Ford said. "Firefighter Araujo's service will never be forgotten."

Last week, Officer Marco DiFranco became the city's first officer to die of the new coronavirus. DiFranco, 50, was a highly decorated, 21-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department most recently assigned to the Bureau of Detectives' narcotics unit.
