East Lyme $1.3M Bridge Repair Project Begins Aug. 13

EAST LYME, CT—Beginning Monday Aug. 12, a bridge replacement project on Route 1 over an East Lyme brook near Heritage Road, dubbed the East Lyme bridge, will impact travel through September.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced the project, which consists of replacing the existing near four-decade-old metal pipe arch culvert with a new precast concrete box culvert. The DOT says "approximately 200 feet of full depth reconstruction of the roadway will be performed adjacent to the bridge. An existing sanitary sewer line will also be relocated to the south of the bridge."

The $1.3 million project is scheduled to be completed by November 24, 2019.

What Motorists Can Expect

Periodic lane closures Mondays through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. starting Aug. 12 through Sept. 4. The DOT says "traffic control personnel and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone."

Then, beginning Sept. 4 and continuing through Oct. 13, there will also be alternating one-way traffic controlled with a temporary traffic signal.

Route 1, just east of Heritage Road, will be detoured while the demolition and construction of the new bridge is performed. The detour will occur for a 14-day period between Oct. 14 and Oct. 27.

Detour Options
For those traveling on Route 1 South: Proceed on Route 161 to the intersection of Interstate 95. Take the ramp to Interstate 95 southbound and proceed to Exit 70.
On Route 1 North: Proceed on Interstate 95 to Exit 74. Turn left at the off ramp onto Route 161 northbound.
