A man from rural LaMoure County North Dakota is dead after trying to save a puppy from a vertical sewer drain Saturday, June 10th.

It happened around 7:00PM Saturday evening near Jud, North Dakota which is southwest of Jamestown.

LaMoure County Sheriff Bob Fernandes says that 19-year-old Jesse Wagner attempted to save the dog after it fell into an open sewer drain that is about 10 feet deep.

The puppy crawled up onto Wagner’s shoulders and was able to get out.

Wagner then lost his grip and fell down into the drain.

It took emergency crews around 30 minutes to get him out.

Fernandes says Wagner's body has been sent to the medical examiner's office in Bismarck for an autopsy.
