Adonit auto-clamping wireless car charger review

Price: £74.99

Adonit is a US firm better known for its smartphone and tablet styluses but it’s now branching out into other phone accessories with this in-car dock.

It is designed for owners of phones with wireless Qi charging, enabling them to mount their phone somewhere visible and charge it without having to plug and unplug a cable every time.

The mount is dual Qi certified, able to charge at 10W, 5W and 7.5W for Apple devices. It can hold any smartphone with a screen between 4.5 and 6.3 inches and offers hands-free operation thanks to an IR senor that opens the dock when a phone is presented.

In the box you get the charger with suction cup and air vent clip mounts, a cigar lighter adaptor and an 80cm cable to power it.

What’s it like?

In terms of doing what it sets out to do, it’s a winner.

As a basic mount it has really good adjustability and flexibility. The suction mount is solid, easy to fit and remove and features a 360-degree ball and socket head and telescopic arm so you can fit it exactly where you want. The only downsides are that once extended it’s quite bulky and can wobble slightly, and the packaged cable needs to be longer.

The IR sensor works well to open when a phone is presented and the rubber grips hold the device really securely. A button on the rear releases the phone, although I found its reaction a little hit and miss.

Adonit say it will charge through cases up to 8mm thick but it can take a bit of careful positioning to ensure a connection with cases close to that.

You can pick up more basic phone mounts for far less so whether the Adonit’s expense is worth not having to mess about with a cable will come down to personal taste, but it does its job well.
