Loudoun Firefighter Suffers Burns Battling Truck Fire In Sterling

A Loudoun County firefighter suffered minor burns on his arm while battling a box truck fire in Sterling on Saturday.

STERLING, VA — A Loudoun County firefighter suffered minor burns on his arm while battling a box truck fire on Saturday, according to the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment. Another person was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Just after 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a truck on fire in the 45000 block of Ocean Court in Sterling, the fire department said Tuesday.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue units from Sterling Park, Kincora, Dulles South and Moorefield were dispatched to the scene where a box truck was on fire next to a building. When the units arrived, smoke was coming from the box truck. The fire had not reached the building.

The fire department’s response was upgraded due to hazardous materials at the scene. Units worked to prevent numerous lithium batteries from reigniting.

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office investigation into the incident determined the fire was accidental, due to battery failure. Damages are estimated at $400,000, with $300,000 for the cargo and $100,000 for the box truck.
