758 pounds of stolen copper wire and batteries leads to charges

A Red Deer man is facing criminal charges following an incident on the city’s north end.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, Red Deer RCMP say they observed a suspicious white Dodge pick-up truck while on patrol of a northern industrial area.

When officers attempted to pull over the truck, police say the driver drove off at a high rate of speed.

A short time later, the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team located the truck parked behind an apartment complex in the Pines neighbourhood, noticing two suspects still inside.

As officers approached, the male and female occupants fled from the vehicle, according to police. After a brief foot chase, both suspects were arrested.

An investigation revealed the pick-up truck was stolen from Lacombe County. Inside the truck, officers found numerous industrial-gauge wires of various sizes and types, as well as batteries. The seized copper wire and batteries weighed a total of approximately 758 pounds.

52-year-old Kevin Brown of Red Deer has been charged with:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Obstructing a Peace Officer

The female suspect has not been charged at this time. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are anticipated. Brown was released and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on Oct. 15.

Red Deer RCMP are asking Red Deer and surrounding area industrial and commercial businesses to contact the non-emergency line at 403-343-5575 if you have experienced a theft of industrial wiring.
