GA Coronavirus Update: Over 800 New Cases

ATLANTA, GA — As of midday Tuesday, the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia included a total of 1,465 deaths, the Georgia Department of Public Health released in its daily report. The updated numbers reflect an increase of over 800 new cases from Monday, bringing the total to 34,737 coronavirus cases statewide.

On Tuesday, Fulton County reported 3,534 positive cases of the coronavirus and 148 deaths. DeKalb County reported 2,577 positive cases and 72 deaths; followed by 2,496 positive cases and 96 deaths in Gwinnett County; 2,244 positive cases and 122 deaths in Cobb County; 2,059 positive cases and 29 deaths in Hall County; and 1,629 positive cases and 128 deaths in Dougherty County, according to the state health department.

Of the 6,177 total hospitalizations among positive cases, 1,461 are intensive care unit admissions. These reflect information at the time cases were reported to the state health department.

The public health website provides graphs of cumulative cases and deaths over time. Numbers over the last 14 days may be incomplete due to cases not yet reported as well as pending test results.

"A confirmed case is defined as a person who has tested positive for 2019 novel coronavirus," says the Georgia Department of Health. "Health care providers diagnose patients with COVID-19 and they, along with laboratories, report the COVID-19 cases to the Georgia DPH. These numbers are preliminary and may change as more information is gathered on a person under investigation."

On Saturday, Kemp announced that Georgia has its lowest number of patients hospitalized with the coronavirus since the state's hospitals began reporting data on April 8. He said there were 1,203 positive patients in hospitals. Additionally, Saturday marked the lowest number of ventilators in use — 897 of the 1,945 available ventilators.

Kemp said Saturday that the state is also making progress in its testing capabilities due to its partnerships with Augusta University through the AU Health ExpressCare app. He said the state has doubled its daily testing capacity. As of Tuesday afternoon, the state health department reported 262,179 tests had been conducted in the state.

Globally, more than 4 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, with 1.3 million in the United States, according to the Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker. More than 290,000 people have died globally, with more than 81,000 in the United States as of Tuesday.
